Career Goals

Performance:

My musical career goals as a an instrumentalist are based on performance, production and music teaching.
Focusing on the performance side of my career, I would like to participate in a band or orchestral environment. I aspire to be a member of a band (instrumental)as a flugelhornist in the genres of jazz and popular music. The other instruments which I play (the trumpet and keyboard) so far, could also come to use in a band.
Collaborating with other vocalists and other musicians, I would like to be a part of a brass section to popular music. Here, I could have solo sections in the instrumentals where I could use improvisation/composition. Collaborating with another brass player for the brass section to create harmonies, play in unison with another horn section player such as a saxophonist is something I have experience in and can continue with.
In my role, I would also take part in the recording of the music for the publishing of the music on YouTube and Sound cloud etc.

Some trumpeters I would like to work with would be Tony Glausi and Louis Dowdeswell who are both trumpeters who I found on YouTube. Tony Glausi shares jazz standard covers, as well as his own jazz compositions. Some of examples of these are 'Blue Bossa' and his own 'So-Society'. The first video to the right is 'So Society' and the second is 'Blue Bossa'.

In 'So Society', Tony works together with his 'Nine-piece band' consisting of the tenor, alto and baritone sax, the trombone, guitar, electric bass, drums and keyboards.
Louis Dowdeswell mainly covers well known songs such as Disney's 'Let it go' and Lion Kings 'Circle Of Life' attached below.

Playing the trumpet or flugelhorn in a band is one of my goals and therefore, working with Tony Glausi or a similar trumpeter, would put my in a band environment consisting of mainly band and woodwind instruments.
Sharing music online via YouTube or other social media platforms is where I could collaborate with Louis Dowdeswell who does a mixture of live performances/gigs and working in the studio to create his content.

A band which inspires me and I could work with is The Young Blood Brass Band. This band creates covers of some well-known music such as Michael Jackson's Human Nature(which I have also covered as a solo) and 'Ain't Nobody'- Felix Jaehn where its just the brass instrument family. This consists of trumpets, trombones, a baritone with the saxophone(woodwind).
An example of their performances is below.

In the short term, joining jazz ensembles in London will give me an insight of a band environment.
Applying and auditioning for The National Youth Jazz orchestra when I am 18 years of age is another one of my short term goals.
The NYJO is a charity, whose mission is to promote jazz as an exciting, engaging and inspirational art form through world-class performances and education work, performing around 40 concerts annually – nationally and internationally.

Joining the NYJO will give me experience of playing in a big band environment with soloing, sight reading and learning a lot of aspects of being a musician. Although my goal is to play in a band of small group, playing jazz in a band will improve my playing skills in jazz and improvisation whilst interacting with other brass players.

Music on the academic side, I would like to teach the instruments I play (the flugelhorn, trumpet and piano). As the trumpet and flugelhorn are my first instruments, I would teach these to a professional level, aiding other students to reach grade 8 standard from grade 1. I would teach the piano from beginner to intermediate level.
These music lessons could take place in primary schools, secondary schools and colleges, however, to progress from this, a bigger goal of mine would be to set up my own business/studio where I do private lessons along with other like-minded instrumentalists to work alongside me (such as professional pianists or instrumentalists from a different musical background)to result in the teaching of a variety of instruments for music lessons. I believe that the more instruments that the business offers to teach, the more diverse of instruments it would be and would invite many more musicians rather than just brass players which will then benefit the growth of the business.
There could be some problems which could arise which could include a lack of staff for desired instruments.
To aid with this, one of my options are to combine Music with Business Management at University if this is possible.

Why I have identified this as my target : My skills and aspirations.

Together with playing the trumpet and flugelhorn, I am also self-taught on the piano. I decided to start learning the piano 3 years ago which comes in useful with my trumpet playing in many ways.
The knowledge of the chord progressions on the piano in jazz and popular music is also essential as it will give me more opportunities in order to play the piano in a band as an alternative to the trumpet. Therefore, in a situation where the trumpet is not necessary for the repertoire being played, I could also demonstrate my skill to play an accompanying instrument.
To add to this, playing the piano helps with transposition from concert key to my key which is Bb. If I was to learn the brass section of a pop song (e.g. Havana - Camila Cabello) which is recorded in G minor, I would have to play my part one tone higher. This is because the piano is in C and will be playing in G minor. However, playing an instrument in Bb would mean that I would play a tone higher from G minor which is A minor.

The video below can demonstrate the concert pitch vs the written Bb pitch.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFEo5nj66ng

Havana - Camila Cabello

I have previously attended the LCM Junior college of music as a member of the Jazz ensemble which took place on Saturdays. Attending this jazz ensemble, I was introduced to jazz and improvisation into more depth on the trumpet. I began learning jazz standards such as Watermelon man - Herbie Hancock, Song for my father - Horace Silver and "Buffalo head" together with some jazz standards where the head melody was composed and transcribed by the band leader. In these jazz standards, I was required to improvise over the chord progression using scales. As an example, 'Song for my father', which is in the key of F minor, I used the F minor scale to improvise over.
7
Over my 2 years of playing jazz, I have learned and performed jazz standards as a solo together with recording to publish onto Soundcloud. These two jazz standards were 'Cantaloupe Island' by Herbie Hancock and Blue Bossa - Kenny Dorham/Dexter Gordon. I have overcome my challenges with improvisation such as doing research into improvising in the particular jazz standard, building up phrases from simple motifs and using "licks" from jazz trumpeters.

before playing jazz, I  played more pieces from the classical style in preparation for my classical grades with Trinity College London. I gained skills with sight reading which is where I play from a piece of music which I have just seen. This skill with reading music is particularly important for classical music as it is usually written rather than learned by ear like jazz. In classical music, which originated in 1750-1820, the composer writes down many directions, dynamic markings telling the musicians how loud or soft to play, how fast or slow it should be played go, and other things to help the performers to give an exact performance of the notes the composer's initial idea of how the piece should go.
hhttps://agoodreedreview.com/2017/06/27/why-care-about-classical-music/

During these exams I also practiced ear training where I was required to play notes according to the notes I would hear. This prepared me for jazz which I studied at college as there were some points where I learned the head melody by ear from a recording we found online. From this, I would learn the key of the song and use this for the improvisation section. Therefore I am able have a solo section in a jazz standard and improvise over the chord progression. I am currently working on a blues composition as past of my styles project where I am improvising in the key of Bb(the blues scale)for the majority of the song.

Below is a video of a solo (In the blues song) I am currently working on:

All of these skills I have built up in whilst studying jazz for two years could contribute to my future career goals where I aspire to play as part of a band of popular music together with jazz.Whilst sharing music on social media to convey to different countries with the help of my knowledge of foreign European languages.
As I picked up the trumpet from the age of 7, teaching these ages from the beginner level in different European countries together with the UK is where I see myself after (or during) university. This will depend on how long it takes for my to achieve the highest practical grades with Trinity and complete the necessary teaching qualifications.

Role Models

TG18.jpg
Tony Glausi :hailed as "a great writer and a terrific trumpet player" by legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach,
An inspiring leading professional in the field of music education is Tony Glausi. Tony Glausi has established his voice as an international award-winning trumpeter, keyboardist, composer, and producer in New York City.
Together with the trumpet, he also plays the flugelhorn and the piano. The instruments he plays specifically are the Bach 43 trumpet, Raw Brass FULGER flugelhorn with an RBT signature ‘Tony Glausi’ mouthpiece and the Nord Stage 2EX keyboard.
Tony Glausi grew up in a family where musical family in Portland, Oregon. His mother and all four of his grandparents were professional musicians in varying capacities. Therefore, he was exposed to all types of music such as jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and everything else in the Black American Music tradition (music genres developed by African Americans)

At a very young age, he taught himself to play his favorite melodies on the piano by ear and later mastered these abilities (ear interpretation) through advanced studies in piano performance and theory. A trumpeter and composer by the age of ten, it was later in high school when Tony began to focus on jazz and improvisation.

\Identifying Tony's successes:
https://www.tonyglausi.com/bio/

Moving onto Tony's successes which mainly began in 2017. Tony participated in various competitions including the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Solo Competition(2017), ITG International Trumpet Competition(2017) and National Trumpet Competition (2014). In these jazz divisions, Tony was awarded with first prize.
Ontop of this, Tony has been recognised in two separate issues of Downbeat Jazz & Blues Magazine for his outstanding improvised solos and own compositions.

All of Tony's achievements which I mentioned above, are some of Tony's key moments in his ascension. Although he doesn't showcase this all over his social media, Tony uses them in his biographies to show how he got to where he is now.

The social media platforms which Glausi uses include YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. These are shown in the screenshots I took of his accounts below.

On YouTube, he includes the rest of his social media in the right hand corner of his channel.

screenshot of YouTube and Instagram pages.

Also, his Sound cloud page is linked below.

Due to his high achievements, he has gained huge amounts of recognition as a trumpeter/flugelhornist.
Tony has also had the unique privilege of engaging in private studies with Wynton Marsalis, one of his greatest heroes and influences.
Tony's past working in music education was at the University of Oregon as a graduate teaching assistant together with (John G. Shedd Institute for the arts) as a private instructor and founding director of the Shedd Youth Jazz Orchestras
Today, Tony is still a passionate and devoted music educator. He maintains a private lesson studio in person and online via Skype, and he is consistently engaged with middle schools, high schools, colleges, and summer camps throughout the United States.
One way I could mimic the way Tony teaches, which is online via Skype, is offering students to take lessons from home on Skype or advertising on social media.Tony Glausi does lessons elsewhere around the world pending his tour schedule. This can mean that, if he is on tour in another county, he would be able to also do lessons in another part of the world.
The rates of all of his lessons, including the Skype lessons (international) begin at $60 per hour or £46.94 in London.
You can get in touch with him through his email: management@tonyglausi.com or use his online enquiry to get more information about his lessons.
There are many financial possibilities for teaching online due to the extra income it can give you. There are no commute times to work and you can fork online outside of your schedule. In the bigger picture, teaching internationally is more likely to provide more students to teach than teaching in one country.  Therefore, This may encourage many other students around the world to take brass lessons. Referring back to where I mentioned music teaching earlier on, I outlined the issues which could occur. In this situation, structuring lessons could become an issue as teaching would occur online, in person and abroad. The main problem which could arise here could be the complications to allocate time to teach in person, abroad and online.

Tony completed both bachelor's degree in jazz performance and a master’s in jazz composition at the University of Oregon
This links to getting my degree in music performance as Tony also did. Not only did he study, but he had the opportunity to work with Brian McWhorter and Steve Owen while composing, performing and recording with university ensembles including the JazzArts Oregon Combo, the prestigious Oregon Jazz Ensemble, the UO Trumpet Ensemble, and the university’s premier brass quintet.
This involvement during studies

The steps : achieving the goals

In order to improve my playing and make progress on the flugelhorn, I will have to be taking individual lessons with a teacher who will aid with reaching my career goals. It is also useful when my teacher is in a profession which is similar to my career goals.
With my trumpet teacher, I can work towards my grades 6-8 which gives me a stepping stone to get into university.
I have gathered that having a teacher/coaching as a guide is a good decision as I have done some research into Tony Glausi's guidance from others which were his family. As Tony had the opportunity to grow up into a musical family where his parents were professional musicians in varying genres,he was exposed to all types of music, developing a profound love for jazz, R&B and hip hop. I believe that this influence Tony took from his musical family guided him on his musical path to professionalism.

Today, Glausi is still being coached by Wynton Marsalis who is one of his inspirations. This can show that even though Glausi is a professional player, having guidance to continue learning from a more experienced trumpeter and to excel is still useful.
I will be taking my grade 5 theory exam in March 2019 and taking my practical exams (7 and 8) before the summer of 2019 which is the end of second year.

Going to university to further study in music performance

Gaining professional contacts in university in my ideal field of work will aid me into working and performing with musicians who I currently look up to. This is where Tony Glausi began his involvement with other trumpeters which I talk about further below.

However, to have a higher level of education to have better chances of getting into jobs which require higher levels of education, I would like to go to university to get a degree in performance as this links the most to playing in a band, learning composition and performance techniques in various genres.
Together with the qualification, I will develop more skills
I will also have the opportunity to meet new musicians when I start at university who play similar instruments (brass). This means that project collaborations could take place, whilst putting myself in a musical environment, similar to Tony's musical environment growing up and during university(with well known musicians) which I talked about previously. From reading about Tony having a musical family and background, it seems to me that they were supportive and motivating role models in his musicianship. I have thought that my method of re-creating this and joining ensembles and groups is a good way to mimic this.
In order to get into performing, the most important aspect to practice is performing itself. Performing as much as you can for various purposes and audiences will improve my performance skills
This can be done in a variety of public places such as shopping centres and pubs.
In January from the 15th, I will be performing a 20-minute public performance in a pub.
I could even do a sandwich year where I would study for a year, gain experience in a musical profession of my choice and then go back to study for another year. Doing this, I could gain experience in playing in a band environment.
Together with my foreign languages, this could play an important part in my music career as there will be some points where I will be travelling to other countries to perform and teach.
On the Kings College London website, my first choice of university, it says that they take into consideration of applicants who speak foreign languages. This is together with evidence of acquaintance with some of the standard repertoire through study and performance, with the ability to write about music and cultural issues.
My experiences of different culture will help to benefit my music and career as there could be opportunities in other parts of the world other than London where it could come to use to be able to speak their language and know the culture of the country. Furthermore, by travelling and leaning languages, this can increase my knowledge of other cultures, combining my interests
I can compare this to Tony as he has been on Tour to many states in the US as shown on the 'Tour' section of his website. https://www.tonyglausi.com/shows/. From this, I assume that Tony doesn't tour outside of the US very often, which is a contrast to my goals.
However, I looked at the YoungBlood Brass Band's website in the 'Tour' section to see if they do tours outside of the US https://www.youngbloodbrassband.com/tour. Their past tours have been around Europe and the US, where they are currently situated.
In the music industries of Europe is likely to have opportunities to play in festivals, parades and competitions abroad and not only in London. There are countries within Europe which can inspire the music I play such as Latin music in Spain.
There is also a Spanish and Portuguese course which I hope to combine with my music course which would help me to become a more fluent speaker in the languages and enhance my awareness  and experiences of cultural differences.
Together with this, I would have the opportunity to work in a Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking environment and go into an exchange programme to another Spanish-speaking partner university.
It also says that they look for applicants who have participated in musical master-classes or summer schools, or have attended the junior departments of conservatoires or specialist music schools. This relates to when I attended the Junior college at The University of West  London to attend their jazz ensemble. This can show potential and achievement as a performer, composer of musical thinker which demonstrates an awareness of what the study of music at a university department involves.

Teaching course for music teaching

As a music teacher, I would be responsible for carrying out a few duties including, assigning and evaluating lessons, preparing students to participate in musical competitions together with taking their graded exams up to grade 8 which I will also be holding. With my experience of taking the Trinity college of London grades 1-4, I would be suited and experienced with transferring this knowledge to younger pupils.

I had a look at some music teaching diplomas on the Trinity College London site.
Teaching diplomas at Trinity cover instrumental and vocal teaching to individuals, small groups including the classroom which is useful. The job requirement also includes a classroom teaching license.
https://www.trinitycollege.com/site/?id=55

A PCGE is a Postgraduate certificate in Education. Although I have talked about the other teaching qualifications, this one is also relevant for teaching. It's a level 7  qualification that takes around a year to complete. The course focuses on Teaching and the theory behind teaching. In the teaching part, you would be put into school placements. Learning the theory behind teaching and learning in children and adults broadens the learners' knowledge together with physically experiencing what it's like to be a teacher. It is not always essential, however if I were to study for this teaching degree after university, I would work on getting the Primary PCGE which would allow me to teach children, together with the further education/adults to teach older ages as well.

To enter for a PCGE, I'll need to have an undergraduate degree, GCSE's at grade 4 in maths and English with passing their skills test (numeracy and Literacy) at the entry. Non academically, it is ideal to have some experience with teaching in the subject area specialised in.
https://www.prospects.ac.uk/jobs-and-work-experience/job-sectors/teacher-training-and-education/pgce

One of my other options was to take a teaching degree alongside my music course at university, however, it hasn't been possible to combine courses due to the funding which is why I have chosen to do a diploma instead. Many of the music teaching jobs which I looked at online look for similar skills and qualifications : a clear DBS, UK primary teaching experience, strong classroom management and organisation.

https://www.indeed.co.uk/jobs?q=music%20teaching&l=London&vjk=5abcbc9cb3422e93

From here, I will start applying for job roles as a music teacher in schools, colleges or music services.
Taking these courses will enable me to progress as I will then be able to apply to roles as a music teacher, reaching one of my musical goals.

Auditioning for bands/Starting a band

Jobs at the LPO The London Philharmonic orchestra is one of the
"world's finest symphony orchestras, balancing a long and distinguished history with a reputation as one of the UK's most adventurous and forward-looking orchestras."

The London Philharmonic Orchestra is currently only hiring for Cello players, however, the usual process would be to send a CV to one of the orchestral managers followed by auditions, trials etc. to join the orchestra. If in the future I am still interested in joining the orchestra as a trumpeter, continuing to check on their website, watching their performances to get an insight are some of the things I could participate in.
https://www.lpo.org.uk/

First, I will be auditioning to join the NYJO or The South London Jazz orchestra as a short term goal.
There are also various ways that I will collaborate with other musicians with similar goals as mine in university. These are most preferably to be brass musicians and accompanying instruments such as the piano, drums and bass. The end goal of collaborating with these musicians would be to form a band with own composed repertoire of a style to define us.

As stated on 'How social media has affected the music industry',The music industry is constantly evolving and social media has been a major influence during the last decade.

The commonly used Instagram, Sound cloud, Facebook and YouTube which provide musicians with opportunities to share their music whilst controlling how it is distributed. The use of Bandcamp, where you are able to discover latest music. The artists who make the music are then supported by Bandcamp.
https://bandcamp.com/

Also due to social media, it is no longer necessary that these artists need to appeal to millions of people to succeed in the industry. In opposition, a group of supporters/followers can help the artist to reach their goals and dreams.

Aaron Washington is a trumpeter whom I found on YouTube. Many trumpeters on YouTube collaborate with each other to create videos to teach and perform to their viewers (usually also trumpeters)
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrxdsDoHLjSbcPgnsWLQvxg
As a trumpeter myself, I could use this as a way to collaborate with some other trumpeters by contacting them and using my portfolio to express what I do.

My Portfolio

The content of my portfolio will be a demonstration of my musical talents, my previous musical experiences and background. My portfolio will showcase my genre and style with my image and achievements.
Within my portfolio I also wish to incorporate videos and images which show the process of creating my portfolio for example, a vlog/blog. This will be done by collaborating with some of the media and photography students using video software like Moviemaker and Adobe Premiere Pro.
In terms of my repertoire, I would like this to reflect on what I am currently working which is covering pop songs and jazz standards, incorporating improvisation.
Linking to playing in a band, collaborating with other musicians in my group could reflect this as I would have other musicians (pianists, drummers and bassists) accompanying me in the songs I decide on including
I have made this decision based on what I have researched about social media. Due to it's increased use in the music industry, including trumpeters I currently look up to using the platforms. I believe that these would include YouTube which is ideal for sharing music which was also done by my role models(Tony Glausi and Louis Dowdeswell) together with creating a music Instagram page. Instagram is useful for contacting artists based one their profile. The profile can represent the musician in terms of the genre and styles of music they play, their role and their musical experiences.
I believe that beginning my portfolio by sharing some examples of my music online is a good starting point.
