Communication in the music Industry Unit 10

Comparing and evaluating methods of communication within the music industry:

Method 1: Social media to music platforms

Social media is a modern method of communication within in the music industry nowadays and has changed many aspects of the industry from.

In particular, Instagram is a suitable platform to publically share music and gain recognition from other artists. Music which is free can be published to gain a higher number of supporters and for the artist's music to be discovered by users social networking sites such as twitter and Facebook.

Together with this, setting up web pages can aid with communication within the music industry as this can be where people will gain your contacts from such as your social media links. The website should include a biography and engaging info to get let the person who is reading know more about you. A visual preview of your music would also be useful such as Soundcloud or YouTube links.
Also, using social media, you are able to use facilities on Twitter and Facebook, for example to help promote  your music or an upcoming gig. These can be alerts an notifications to the targeted group or event advertising which you can use to tell people about an event or performance.
This point also links to the other method of communication which I have mentioned which is touring and performing live.

On the other hand, in today's music industry, the increasing amount of social media platforms have been making it more difficult for upcoming musicians to be heard. This is due to the like minded worldwide musicians which can make up thousands wanting attention.
Also, in opposition, emails can be a more efficient way of communicating and is a cost effective way of maintaining contacts.A mailing list can include the email addresses or friends, acquaintances and journalists.
Adding on to this, when someone performs at a gig, they could collect the details of the audience members who enjoy their show and add them to the mailing list aswell. Which means that when there are more gigs, they can communicate with those who like their music through email which possibly results in a array of contacts.
Moreover, artists shouldn't always assume that people will automatically discover their social media profiles if their profile is not under an easily discoverable name. Therefore, this is where using a website (where it will be easier for fans to find the artist) will help to promote your social media profiles.

Social media is also often a good way to get offered gigs and opportunities through comments, direct messages and general questions. Therefore, you have to maintain regularity on those platforms so that you don't miss anything.
Using your social media pages to share details of your upcoming gigs or performances can be a good way to communicate with the people who enjoy listening to your music, inviting them to your events.

Examples of artists who use social media:

As one of my examples I will be looking into Tony Glausi's social media pages and how his use of social media relates to my evaluations of this method above.

This is a screenshot of Tony Glausi's Instagram page where he includes a bio saying 'Trumpeter, keyboardist, composer, producer. 1t place in '17 International trumpet competition &'17 Carmine Caruso, every Sunday at @therumhouse from 3-6pm.
Here, he is promoting his weekly show at The Rum House. This supports my point where I talked about social media being suitable for promoting and advertising your gigs.

He also adds a link to a website where his latest albums are available to be sold. At the moment, this is his 'Identity Crisis' album. This makes his albums easily accessible to his fans which could possible increase the sales of his album.

Attached on the left hand side is Tony Glausi's website.
I screen shotted this page as this is where he includes the links to all his social media platforms at the bottom of the page which makes it easier for his viewers to find him. This includes his Instagram, Twitter, Linked and Instagram (as shown above).
On his social media sites such as Youtube, he puts his other social media platforms linked on there. On Youtube, he has linked his Facebook account, Instagram, Spotify and his website.

Method 2: Advertising on a notice board of a musical environment

Advertising music, a musician or a concert in an environment  where music is played could be a good method of communication as it  is direct to the people they want to reach
In the Roundhouse, there is a notice board available for musicians to reach out to guitarists to work with, for example. It can also be done in opposition such as advertising yourself as a session trumpeter to play in gigs or record etc.

Some advantages of this could be easily reaching potential musicians or gaining contacts through social media or email. From my own experience of seeing these posts in the Roundhouse, the most common contact options which would be Instagram, email and phone.
These direct forms of contact make this method reliable as you can send an email to their personal address or message them on their social media account, being sure that it will get to the artist.

Using this method, it is unlikely that a broad range of people would see the advertisement as it will only be the people who visit the venue where it is advertised. Unless the advertisement is put up in a range of musical environments, it wouldn't reach a lot of people like social media would.

An example relating to my own experience, I have gained the contact of a musician who would like to work with trumpeters and some other musicians. Because she had left her email address on the board, it was very straightforward to contact her directly.

An example I have found of this online is a website called Band Notice Boards where other musicians advertise themselves or put out that they are looking for other musicians.
Band Notice Board was made to create a community for musicians to communicate online due to it not being available at the time. It was created by a bassist and a bassist.

Band Noticeboard requires a sign up to be able to contact other musicians. The website allows you to use Google Maps to know the location of the musician and your commute. A musician can also add a description to tell others what you are seeking or who you are as a musician.

These publications made by some musicians are very similar to the ones that were written on the noticeboard at Roundhouse such as a guitarist looking for a rock band and a jazz bassist looking for a guitarist.

Method 3: Touring and performing live

With the growth of social media in the music industry, the significance of person-person interaction can be easily forgotten. Touring and doing live performances can help a musician to get more recognition as an artist and gain more viewers.

Touring in public venues is a good way to come across and meet other musicians in the industry.
On the positive side, doing this can increase marketing opportunities within the music industry. From putting on shows and touring, fans will be able to buy merchandise from the booth which should have your name and logo advertised. This also creates a method of further contact to the musician.
Furthermore, touring in different countries can give you more opportunities to meet new people and differentiate to the music of that country to engage with the audience in a different way.

By continuously creating music, you can work on developing your own signature sound and finding your own identity for your music. Once you have found it, it doesn't have to stay the same way and can continuously be altered according to changes in style.
Therefore when record labels are looking for music, the may recognise originality, not to following the trends or only pleasing people who could be future fans. When a record labels signs an artist, the artist makes a contract with the record label. A&R would work with the artists in order to make sure that the correct repertoire is chosen, the producers they will work with and studio/rehearsal settings.

2014-03-24-kelleemaizelivenepal.jpgAn artists from a blog I have read, called Kellee Maize is a rapper, singer, motivational speaker, activist and entrepreneur. However, she makes music full time basis whilst doing what she loves to do.  On this blog she outlines the ways that she has created her success in the music industry. She has outlined social media, giving out music for free, making her own EPK and emailing. These can all be effective method of communication.
A point which related what I am researching in this method was about putting on shows and performing live.
She outlines that performing live can get you the same results as an online campaign. Therefore, this can be a disadvantage for performing live. It is very possible to get fans from putting on a show, however, the same effort can be put into an online marketing campaign which could get you a higher number of new supporters. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't perform at all, but a regularity which keeps you in touch with your fans.

Below is a video attached of an interview that Kellee got invited for. She says that
"I never contacted them asking them for an interview ... they saw that I had gotten some buzz and wanted an interview. I was honored and beyond excited given I was OBSESSED with his music when I was young!"
