Employability- creating websites 10/1.19

My website:

Making a plan for my website - what will it look like, what sections will it include.

1. Looking into some other websites made by some professional musicians:

https://www.jorjasmith.com/

On Jorja Smith's website, her latest album featuring 'blue lights', 'the one,' 'blue lights,' 'teenage fantasy,' 'on your own' and 'where did i go?' is the first thing you see when you open the website. The album is called 'Lost and found'.
The aspects of the site which attracted me were the instant reference to her album. I believe that this is a good opening page, especially for someone who doesn't know the artist, to quickly be able to navigate to listen to her music, getting to know the artist.
The site then develops onto her tour dates which are clearly outlined.
However, on the negative side, I still believe that the website could have more detail and more features to it rather than just one video in the section for 'Videos'

In contrast, the website doesn't a bibliography to allow the viewer to learn more about the artist. When this is compared to an artist's website with a bibliography, the life of the artist is hidden with only the music to know about. When there is a bibliography, we would feel more connected to the artist as they will share their musical experiences, the key points in their life and their career journey.

https://www.palomafaith.com/

This idea also features in the second website I looked into - Paloma Faith. The opening paragraph states the title of her album: 'The Architect'. However, there are no active links to the album to make it easily accessible to the listener.
To make up for this, at the bottom of the page are all of her navigations. This makes her website unique due to websites usually having the navigations at the top of the page. Opposing the idea of the navigations being easy to see at the top of the page, Paloma has an addition which replaces this which seem more important to her. At the top right of the page, there are reminders of 'kindness', 'empathy', 'environment' and 'resolution'. Each of these have 5 practices to contribute to the to one of the reminders which ad as positive and influential 'feel' to her website.

On the down side, the colour choices could have been better as the black background makes the website less attractive to me and sometimes it can be hard to navigate due to the font being so small and not easily seen, except from the contrasting colour.

https://drakeofficial.com/music.html

Drake's website is probably the clearest of them all with good colour choices, bold font, clear navigations and the featuring of his recent songs on the first page.
Also, unlike the other sites, the navigations on the side of the page seem to be in a good order.
Beginning with the biography and ending with the 'shop' gives the viewer time to get to know the artist and listen to their music before subscribing or buying their merch.

Some aspects which could be improved with Drake's Website is that his music is only available for users of itunes when you click on one of the albums. This is not convenient for all music listeners as many people listen to music on different platforms such as soundcloud, YouTube etc. Apart from this, the website only then features 3 of his music videos.

I have noticed a similarity between these sites which is the way that the artists feature their most popular/highest viewed track/album on the front page of the site.

Taking on some of these influences for the creation of my website-  My website:

Content:
These are some things which the content on my website could include

  • Videos of some live footage - Human nature performance LSC, collaborations with vocalist videos- duets,
  • Behind the scenes rehearsals and recording sessions - Blue bossa and Chanson Napolitaine
  • Steps to creating a music video
  • Having a photo with photography students
  • instruments photos
  • Photos of performances
  • diversity of music genres - world music
  • trailers of new coming jazz standard - september in the rain
  • featuring some other artists
  • languages intertwined
  • performance dates

I will also be creating a content bank where I can gather consent which I wish to publish later.

Something which I have chosen to include is a one line header of my roles at the top of the page such as the words 'Trumpeter' or 'Flugelhornist' so that the person who visits my site will instantly get an idea of what I do.

Researching into the website above titles 'How to build a music website'...

I would like to have a clear background and a brass themed page to clearly promote what I do. This could include some professional photos featuring my instruments. Together with this, featuring 'calm' colours such as pastel to represent the sound of my instrument which is soft and mellow.
